US Presidential Election 2024: Biden Warns, Democracy in Danger with Trump's Possible Return

President Joe Biden spoke strongly about the upcoming U.S. election, warning that a second term for Donald Trump could harm American democracy. Biden, facing concerns about his approval ratings and age, aimed to energize his supporters and sway undecided voters by highlighting the risks he believes a second Trump presidency would bring to the U.S. as a global symbol of democracy.

In a speech in Phoenix, Arizona, Biden, 80, stated that the U.S. is at a crucial moment in its history. He expressed worry about the authoritarian values of Trump's Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, calling it an "extremist movement" that challenges the fundamental beliefs of democracy. Biden paused during his speech when a heckler demanded action on climate change, emphasizing that democracy, though challenging, requires respect for diverse opinions.

Though he mentioned Trump by name only once, Biden aimed to contrast democratic principles with what he sees as the conduct of his predecessor. He defined democracy as the "rule of the people" and stressed the importance of free and fair elections, regardless of political party. He condemned political violence, referring to the Capitol Hill attack on January 6, stating that such violence is undemocratic and should never be normalized for political gain.

Biden warned that the risk to democracy persists, pointing out recent threats of violence against General Mark Milley, the chair of the U.S. armed forces joint chiefs of staff, labeled as "treason" by Trump. Biden dismissed MAGA extremists, saying they lack understanding and pose a continued danger.

The speech, delivered at an event honoring the late John McCain, a Republican senator and critic of Trump, showcased Biden's bipartisan relationship with McCain as an example of American democracy. Biden criticized today's Republican party as being influenced by MAGA extremists, suggesting their agenda could fundamentally change American democratic institutions.
