Top US Senate Republican McConnell to serve out term despite health concerns

Top US Senate Republican Mitch McConnell to Serve Out Term Despite Health Concerns

Mitch McConnell, a top Republican leader in the U.S. Senate, has stated that he intends to finish both his current leadership term and his full Senate term. This means he might step down from his leadership position before leaving office altogether.

He mentioned, "I am going plan to finish my term as leader and I'm going to finish my Senate term" to reporters.

Recently, there were two incidents where McConnell, who is 81 years old, had public moments where he seemed to freeze up, leading people to wonder how long he will continue to serve. However, he hasn't provided many details about what caused these incidents.

McConnell has already made history as the longest-serving party leader in the U.S. Senate. His current term as leader will end in January 2025, and his Senate term goes until January 2027. It's unclear what he plans for the two-year gap between his leadership role and his Senate term. His spokesperson didn't give more information.

It's worth noting that some powerful leaders have stayed in office after leaving their leadership positions, like Nancy Pelosi, a former Democratic House Speaker who is currently serving in a different role.

In March, McConnell had a fall at an event in Washington and had to go to the hospital for a concussion. He returned to the Senate in April. Since then, he's had two incidents where he appeared to freeze up, with the most recent one happening while he was talking to reporters in Kentucky on August 30th.

McConnell has been a significant figure in the Senate, serving as the majority leader from 2015 to 2021 and as the minority leader since then.
