Biden seeks to reassure Ukraine as war aid becomes US political battleground
US President Joe Biden assured everyone that America won't abandon Ukraine, even after Congress removed $6 billion in aid to prevent a government shutdown. Biden emphasized the strong bipartisan support for helping Ukraine and urged lawmakers to stop playing games and get the aid approved.
Over the weekend, there was a surprise compromise on Capitol Hill as lawmakers excluded additional funds for Ukraine from the bill that would fund the US government until November 17. This decision came shortly after Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, visited Washington to seek renewed aid.
The move shocked many, including the EU's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, who expressed deep regret. Despite this, Europe pledged to continue supporting Ukraine. German officials warned of the risk Ukraine faces from radical Republicans, and Ukraine's defense minister received assurance from the US that support would persist.
Republicans in Congress tied further funding to border security, with some emphasizing the need to prioritize America's borders. President Biden urged Republicans to honor their commitment to supporting Ukraine separately.
There's bipartisan support for Ukraine aid, but some Republicans, particularly those close to former President Trump, oppose compromises on spending. Matt Gaetz from Florida even threatened to oust Republican Speaker McCarthy for working with Democrats.
President Biden had requested an additional $24 billion in funding for Ukraine in August, emphasizing its importance in the face of Russia's aggression. Any lapse in aid could impact the battlefield, but Ukrainian officials expressed confidence that US support remains unchanged.
Despite the political maneuvers, Ukraine remains steadfast, with its foreign minister warning Russia against underestimating Ukraine's strength. Zelenskyy emphasized his commitment to upholding Ukraine's reputation and securing international support.
While short-term changes in Ukraine are unlikely, there are concerns about the credibility of the message that the US stands with Ukraine for the long haul.
