Undefeated Dallas Cowboys look so good, but Mike McCarthy’s offense should do more

The Dallas Cowboys are doing really well this season, winning all their games so far. But there's room for improvement in their offense, which is led by their coach, Mike McCarthy.

In their recent game against the New York Jets, things were a bit one-sided. The Jets lost their starting quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, to an injury early in the game. This made the game less exciting and more like a casual phone-scrolling session for fans.

The Cowboys' opponent, the Jets, had a rookie quarterback named Zach Wilson, who couldn't perform at his best. On the Cowboys' side, they had Trey Lance, who was the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. In the first two weeks of the season, the Cowboys won against both New York teams, the Giants, and the Jets. They beat the Jets 30-10, and it wasn't a close or thrilling game. If Aaron Rodgers hadn't been injured, the Jets might have put up a better fight. But Cowboys fans don't wonder about that; they're more concerned about how their offense would look if Kellen Moore were still the offensive coordinator.

During the offseason, the Cowboys made many changes, including Mike McCarthy taking over as the primary play caller instead of Kellen Moore. This was a necessary move to freshen things up. Moore had been with the Cowboys since 2018, and his offensive strategies were becoming outdated. Both parties decided it was time to part ways. In the first two weeks of the season, the Cowboys' offense looks different without Moore, but it's not a complete transformation.

Under McCarthy's play-calling, the Cowboys' offense is reminiscent of his days as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018. During that time, he had quarterbacks like Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. They had multiple versatile running backs, a fullback, and used running backs in the passing game. Their offensive linemen could play multiple positions if needed, and they had a star wide receiver. The key was getting the ball out of the quarterback's hands quickly.

It's still early in the season, so it's hard to say if McCarthy's play calling will make a big difference in the long run. The Cowboys' offensive line has dealt with injuries, and their execution in both games against New York teams has been inconsistent. It's not terrible, but it's not great either.

After the recent win, Cowboys guard Zack Martin mentioned that they left some opportunities on the field and should have scored more touchdowns in both games. In Week 1, they won 40-0, but it was a rainy game. In Week 2, they dominated the Jets, who struggled without a strong quarterback. The Cowboys could have scored even more if their execution and play calling had been better.

For example, in the third quarter, they had a great scoring opportunity, but instead of a simple run, they tried a trick play that didn't work well. This stalled their drive, and they had to settle for a field goal.

Inside the opponent's 20-yard line, the Cowboys struggled to convert their opportunities. On a positive note, their new kicker, Brandon Aubrey, did well with four field goals in the second half. But there's more potential in the offense, and they need to do better.

In contrast, in Los Angeles, Kellen Moore's old team, the Chargers, scored a lot of points in their first two games. However, they still lost both games despite having one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL, Justin Herbert. So, while Cowboys fans were hopeful that McCarthy taking over as play caller would solve their offensive issues, there's still work to be done. The team is working on building better connections and a new approach to their offense, but there's room for improvement.
